Madekwe was born into an ethnically diverse family. Her father is Nigerian Swiss and her mother is English. She was born and raised on a council estate south of London. When she was 14, she attended The Brit School. She went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London which she graduated with an acting BA. Madekwe made an appearance in the 2008 Comedy film How to Lose Friends & Get People to Leave. Her theatre credits comprise Little Sweet Thing by Roy Williams as well as Flight Path by David Watson.
