Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the most streamed song within six months. The single a mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought renewed interest to reggaeton, but also attracted attention towards Latin music generally. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs in Spanish predominantly, as well as four tracks in the year 2016. In the midst of the Despacito's popularity in 2017, there were 19 mostly Spanish tracks which made it into the top 100. And in 2020 there were 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017 and soon after popular artists began working with reggaeton acts. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny for the production of MIA (2018) and Madonna collaborated on Medellin with Maluma (2019). Certain reggaeton performers lamented the trend towards popular music by 2020. But a new group, Rauw Alejandro wanted to maintain the evolution and development of reggaeton. Incorporating elements of electronic dance music, and other styles was a common procedure.
